Flea and Tick Prevention

Florida is home to some spectacular weather, but it’s also home to pet parasites like fleas and ticks. Many pet parents are rightly concerned about using pesticides around their pets. They are also concerned about giving their pets too much medication. Natural Holistic Health Care in North Miami Beach, FL looks at dealing with fleas and ticks naturally.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Natural Tick Prevention

Always check yourself and your pets for ticks whenever you’ve gone outside, especially if you have walked near long vegetation. Ticks prefer warm, moist areas, so make sure to double-check your pet’s ears, groin area, and the area under the tail.

Natural Flea Prevention

The American Kennel Club recommends giving your dog a vinegar bath once a month to kill or prevent fleas. Mix a quart of water with a cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, and a cup of your dog’s usual shampoo. You can also use apple cider vinegar for cats. Use one-part vinegar to two parts water to make a flea repellent for your cat’s fur. Use every few days.

Flea and Tick Treatment

Believe it or not, one of the best non-chemical flea treatments is a good vacuum cleaner.  Make sure to vacuum furniture, as well as floors, since fleas like to jump off of your pets in between meals. Empty your vacuum canister or bags frequently, because flea eggs have been known to survive a vacuum trip, hatch, and crawl out of the vacuum cleaner. Launder bedding in hot water frequently, because this also kills fleas.

Never Use Insect Repellents Meant for People

Any insect repellent made for humans, including natural repellents, should never be used on pets. They are too strong and might wind up poisoning your pet. If your pet shows any signs of poisoning, call our veterinary clinic immediately.
